Want to become a traffic controller in NSW?

Traffic Control Licences offers the nationally recognised RIISS00054 Traffic Controller Skill Set at two Sydney locations: Arndell Park (Blacktown) and Marrickville. 

The course is the NSW entry point for people wanting to work as a traffic controller and includes training in directing traffic with a stop/slow bat, portable traffic-control devices, workplace communication and safe work practices. 

What qualification do I need to become a traffic controller in NSW?

The relevant nationally recognised training product is:

RIISS00054 – Traffic Controller Skill Set

It includes:

  • RIIWHS201E – Work safely and follow WHS policies and work procedures
  • RIICOM201E – Communicate in the workplace
  • RIIWHS205E – Control traffic with a stop-slow bat
  • RIIWHS206 – Control traffic with portable traffic control devices and temporary traffic signs. 

In NSW, you also need to complete the required SafeWork NSW traffic-control training and assessment to obtain a Traffic Control Work Training (TCWT) Card. 

Traffic Controller Course Requirements

Before you enrol, you will need:

17 years of age or older
You must be at least 17 on the day your training starts. 

A Unique Student Identifier (USI)
A USI is required before enrolling. You can create one free through USI.gov.au.

100 points of identification
SafeWork NSW requires a minimum 100-point evidence-of-identity check before training or assessment. 

An appropriate understanding of written and spoken English
You need to be able to understand course material and communicate safely in a traffic-control environment. 

No previous traffic-control experience is required for the Traffic Controller course. SafeWork NSW currently lists no prerequisites for this training. 

How long does a traffic controller course take?

Our RIISS00054 Traffic Controller training takes 1 day.

Training includes theory, classroom activities and practical traffic-control exercises using full-scale devices and vehicles in a controlled environment. 

The required assessment is completed separately. Traffic Control Licences currently offers assessment the following day or on another available date within 90 days.

After completing the training, you receive a SafeWork NSW Statement of Completion (SOC). A current SOC allows you to perform the relevant work under supervision while you complete the final assessment. 

After successfully completing the required assessment, you can receive your SafeWork NSW Traffic Control Work Training Card.

What is the difference between the blue and yellow traffic control cards?

The Traffic Controller course (RIISS00054) is for workers who direct traffic using a stop/slow bat and other approved traffic-control devices.

The Implement Traffic Control Plans course (RIISS00055) is for workers who implement traffic management plans at the worksite, including setting up, monitoring and closing down traffic-control devices. SafeWork NSW specifically notes that the Traffic Controller course does not qualify you to set up or work with traffic control plans. 

Traffic Control Licences offers both courses and a Combo Course for students who want both skill sets. 

Do I need a White Card?

A White Card (CPCCWHS1001) may also be required when working on construction sites. Traffic Control Licences offers White Card training at its Sydney locations.
